Nestled in Zhengzhou, a renowned national historical and cultural city, Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics (ZUA) enjoys a prime location in the southern part of the North China Plain, bordering the Yellow River to the north and backing onto Mount Song to the west. Blessed with convenient transportation, it stands as the only full-time comprehensive undergraduate institution in Henan Province with distinct aeronautical and astronautical characteristics.

Founded in 1949, the same year as the People's Republic of China, the university began as Pingyuan Provincial School of Finance and Economics. Following a national restructuring of 16 aviation schools in 1964, it was renamed Zhengzhou School of Aeronautical Industry. It upgraded to Zhengzhou Junior College of Aeronautical Industry Management in 1978, and further to Zhengzhou Institute of Aeronautical Industry Management in 1984.Throughout its history, the university was successively affiliated with the Ministry of Aeronautical Industry, the Ministry of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I). In 1999, its governance was transferred to a joint management system between the central and local governments, with Henan Province taking primary responsibility for daily administration.

ZUA's development milestones include: being approved as a candidate institution for master's degree conferral in Henan Province (2008); gaining official master's degree conferring status (2013); being selected for the National Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China (2017); becoming a university co-sponsored by the People's Government of Henan Province and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) (2017); being listed among Henan's Key Characteristic Discipline Construction Universities (2020); being approved as a candidate institution for doctoral degree conferral in Henan Province (2021); and advancing to a key cultivation institution for doctoral degree conferral (2025).

The university boasts a campus spanning over 2,800 mu (approximately 187 hectares), with a total construction area of 1.02 million square meters, including 100,000 square meters of laboratories. The total fixed assets are valued at 2.6 billion RMB, with teaching and research equipment worth 420 million RMB. The university library houses 2.46 million volumes of print collections and provides access to 31 Chinese and international databases.
